Canadian Branch Heraldry
Armorial Bearings Granted to Members
of the Canadian Branch
Gordon Macpherson
In 1967 Gordon Macpherson, the Niagara Herald
Extraordinary, and former Chairman of the
Branch, started presenting shields of Clansmen, who had achieved a Grant of arms, to the Clan Museum in
Newtonmore. This display on the Heraldry Wall has grown from the original 6 to over 75 today. Gordon painted
each shield as a new Grant of Arms is matriculated. In 2016 the room in the museum containing the Heraldry
Wall was renamed the Gordon Macpherson Niagara Herald Extraordinary Room
recognizing his contributions.
Armorial bearings can be granted to Canadian citizens on petition to the Chief Herald of Canada at the Canadian Heraldic Authority (CHA). Prior to the establishment of the CHA in 1988, Canadians with Scottish antecedents could petition Lord Lyon at Lyon Court, Edinburgh. The bearing of heraldic arms is an honour, with Canadian arms being signaled by a publication in the Canada Gazette at the time of the grant.
The following display is a chronological list in order the date of grant of the armorial achievements of current and deceased members of the Canadian Branch without the blazon or the description of the symbolism of the charges. Where possible the complete achievement is shown in colour. Otherwise the monochrome version is used, and in one case the shield only is shown as the complete achievement is not available. Successors to living armigers are called cadets. Their shields are displayed when the recipient is a current member of the Branch.
